Elementary education 1833-1870 Essay Example for Free

Rudimentary instruction 1833-1870 Essay What was the job of the administration in creating Elementary Education 1833-1870? 1. For what reason did the administration assume little job in training before the nineteenth century? Government assumed little job in instruction before the nineteenth century in light of numerous reasons, one of them being Laissez faire. Free enterprise was the way of thinking of the legislature that it was not their job to engage in the lives of the individuals. Edward Baines expounded on the condition of instruction in 1846 and said it isn't the obligation of the administration to take care of the peoplethese are things that the individuals can and should do themselves some idea this was the manner in which God needed things to be. Other felt that the fittest and most extravagant could endure; the thought failed to help poor people. One of the main things government was happy to engage in was protecting the nation. Cash was another thought process why the administration assumed little job. The administration didnt need to burn through cash on teaching poor people, they would much rather spend their cash on the illustrious corrals and the military. On Samuel Whitbreads Bill this theme was talked about It would trouble the nation with a most tremendous cost. Not exclusively did they not have any desire to put cash towards training yet in addition it would have been an over the top expensive venture, which they thought should be possible without. Samuel Whitbread contended that more instruction was required and that fund-raises was the path forward when he confronted the administration, yet the House of Lords dismissed his Bill. The Class framework was something else that was keeping the legislature from contributing cash towards training. Everybody knew their place in the public eye so for the poor to peruse compose and be taught would make them progressively insightful and mess up The Great Chain of Being; this was another name for the social structure at that point. The chain of being was expounded on once by a Bishop in 1720 and he said God so arranges it that we generally have some Poor among us from this The extraordinary chain of being had come to fruition. The Government essentially didnt see the requirement for change. There were at that point Sunday Schools and Dame Schools accessible for poor people, which were provided by the congregation and people As far as instruction was concerned, the legislature was content perusing this its appears as though the administration couldnt be tried to improve if there was nothing amiss with how things were at present going. This helps me to remember the well-known axiom why fix it, if its not broken. Progressive thoughts were additionally something that was viewed as a danger if the poor were to be instructed. In the event that they were instructed to peruse, at that point they would have the option to comprehend and peruse Anti-Christian books and tales about unrests in different nations, for example, France. This was additionally talked about in the Debate on Samuel Whitbreads Bill, It would empower them to peruse awful books, and distributions against Christianity religion was extremely solid as of now and to disturb it could have lead to social turmoil. Rebelling against how they believe they remain in the public arena would make them ill bred to their bosses this was additionally discussed on Samuel Whitbreads Bill. Guardians of poor kids didnt need their youngsters to go to class and learn, in light of the fact that they needed them to work and acquire cash. This was the conventional lifestyle for the destitute individuals and the majority of them were quick to stay with it. They chipped away at ranches and in mines. Nonetheless if the guardians were to take a gander at the upsides of instructing their youngsters they would see that with training they could show signs of improvement occupations and gain more cash. Despite the fact that it would have required some investment it despite everything would have been the more savvy decision, however as they were not taught themselves they never thought of it that way. 2. For what reason did the legislature become associated with creating rudimentary training for all during the nineteenth century? Government in the long run needed to get engaged with creating basic instruction. The expanding populace implied that schools couldn't adapt to the a lot of understudies, so more schools were worked to oblige the requests of numbers. The enormous quantities of students additionally implied that more educators were required and to utilize more instructors cash was required, so without the assistance and cash from the administration training would have gone no place. In addition to the fact that they would have required more educators yet in addition they would require greater schools to have space for the huge increment of students. The destitute individuals could no longer take care of themselves, so the legislature needed to step in. They may have been battling in light of the fact that the higher classes were sending their youngsters to class so they would have had a huge preferred position over poor people and uneducated kids when the two of them challenge for work, as they got more established. A connection the raising populace had with the progressions outside instruction is initially the 1832 Great Reform Act. Just because the enormous new mechanical towns had the option to choose MPs, the vast majority of these MPs were enthusiastic about tidying up the towns. At long last the consolidated impacts of the Reform Act and the cholera pestilence of 1832 made the everyday environments in all towns a significant policy driven issue. Instruction was required for individuals to have the option to work the machines. Because of these requests the extent of instruction was broadened to incorporate the offspring of progressively normal people. Better-instructed agents and specialties individuals were expected to create better products to build the nations economy with exchange. Better-taught laborers were needed; the eventual fate of laborers training stepped forward with the Factory Act of 1833. This Act set out that each manufacturing plant youngster ought to get two hours tutoring a day. Different nations were instructing their childhood and were in this way were in front of Britain in that office, so to dodge humiliation and stay up with the latest the legislature concluded the time had come to show the more youthful age. This was a significant time for the nation since they understood that the kids are the future and teaching them would be such a great amount of better for the legislature. This would be on the grounds that to have progressively instructed laborers later on would mean individuals improving. In the event that nations advanced beyond Britain, at that point they would have more information, to stop this the administration presented an instruction Bill, this was perused from it If we leave our workfolk incompetent, they will become over-coordinated in the opposition of the world by W. E Forster. More cash was rolling in from the countrys exchange and domain. This implied more cash could and was advanced towards training for poor people. The majority of the cash from the exchange originated from the modern insurgency. This was primarily because of the exchange that traders did with Australia and different nations. Something else that had a key influence in the incredible pay was the Railway business. This was rapidly turning into a national framework and acquired incredible heaps of cash. A connection with more cash rolling in from training was that more cash could be spent on protection. This was useful in such a case that Britain were to do battle we would have ideally have been wealthy. Destitute individuals were allowed to cast a ballot, yet they required some information on who to decide in favor of and why. In the event that they comprehended what things they needed from the administration, at that point they could have a harsh thought of who has indistinguishable musings and aspiration from them for the running of the nation. They had to realize who to decide in favor of in such a case that that individual won he would run the nation, so they are deciding in favor of a significant issue. In the change Act of 1867 most regular workers men were allowing to cast a ballot. This was significant connection outside training in light of the fact that with taught voters the nation has a superior possibility of a decent and first rate Prime Minister.

The influence of Technology Essay Sample

The influence of Technology Essay Sample Can you imagine the modern world without technologies? It is possible to say that most of the people are addicted to the comfortable life that technologies give us every day, and no one doesn’t want even to think of life without them. However, it is essential to understand that not all of the changes are completely positive. Technology has changed our lives rapidly, especially if to look at communication, education, and lifestyle, but it is up to everyone to decide what things are good and what are bad. In the first place, technologies have changed the way people communicate nowadays. From one side, the variety of social networks helps to interact with the people even if they live far away. Mobile phones also help to be in touch with the family and friends any day and night. Thanks to such programs as Skype and LivePerson people can even see each other living on different contents. The borders do not exist anymore, which makes people closer. On the other hand, people less communicate outside the Internet. The scientists state that personal communication is much less popular nowadays than it was before. Apart from this, it is good to mention online dating. A great number of people prefer to date online. They are afraid to meet people personally or just don’t know how to do this. It is easy to notice that commutation with the modern technologies isn’t always a good thing. The second important thing that modern technologies have changed is education. From one point of view, it is much easier to study now because there is no need to look for information in libraries. It is possible to find everything necessary on the web. Apart from this, it is very simple to find someone, who can help to solve some assignment, which saves time and efforts of the students. Thanks to the modern technologies, education now isn’t only simpler but also more interesting. However, as it is very easy to find information, the students should study much more information than it was in the past. As a result, young people look for the different methods to make their lives easier. Unfortunately, such approach isn’t always good because a lot of the students don’t get the knowledge they shoul d have to be professionals in their sphere. The third thing that was rapidly changed thanks to technology in our lives is a lifestyle. In general, the lives of ordinary people became easier. It is possible: to work home, to find out where is a traffic jam, how to get to some place, where to eat, where to order food and other staff, where to spend free time and many other things. Apart from this, thanks to new technologies people have more variety of the hobbies. However, not only positive changes happened with the lifestyles of the ordinary human beings. For instance, people became lazier. Very often they do not have a desire to go outside when they just can order everything online. The same situation is with traveling. A great number of people are satisfied with the programs they can watch on TV about different countries. It is obvious that technology has changed our lives. In most of the cases, these changes are very positive. They make our lives easier and more interesting. However, there are also some negative effects like loneliness and laziness. It is possible to take the most advantage of the technologies but it is necessary to be a smart person, who knows how to use his/her time and abilities.

Our writers will create an original "Social worker and agency assignment children of inmates" essay for you Create order The office of the organization is located in Miami Gardens; however most of the activities performed by Children of Inmates are conducted outside of the office building. The agency does three main types of work to help children with incarcerated parents: bonding visits, public advocacy and providing assistance to children (Children of Inmates, 2018). The agency first of all tries to ensure that children whose parent(s) got incarcerated can stay in contact with them even if they cant see each other often. Children of Inmates allow their representatives to meet children in different informal setting and establish whether both parties (children and parents) are indeed willing to meet. If so, meetings are arranged so that children can stay in touch or re- bond with their incarcerated parents. The agency also closely monitors development and social needs of children, and in case a problem is identified offers referrals to social services which can best address children`s needs. This is important because many families with incarcerated members are socially underprivileged and may be afraid to seek help. Children of Inmates guides these families through such process and helps with a number of issues including paperwork (Children of Inmates, 2018). Assessment strategies, measures, approaches and results The assessment strategy, as the intervention itself, were based on the premises of the PRAISES model. The framework consists of five subsequent stages that have to be followed: (1) the pre- intervention; (2) assessment; (3) intervention; (4) systematic evaluation; and (5) stabilization of the steps (Bloom Phillips, 2018). Such model was applied to help a girl, who after her father has been incarcerated, had emotionally distanced herself from her family and did not attend school multiple times. The girl`s grandmother has also reported her constantly being in bad mood and experiencing anxiety. Importantly, the entire extended family is concerned about the issue. The first step to help the client, a girl of 9 years of age, was to enroll her into the Children of Inmates program. A referral has to be completed by the inmate (father) or by the client who wants to be in the program. After the office staff members will receive confirmation, the home visit followed to complete the necessary paperwork. The key measure taken within the context of the intervention was to access how incarceration of the child`s parent (father) has impacted his well- being. In order to do that a number of assessment tools are suggested. One of such assessment measures is the Depression and Anxiety Scale- 21 (DAS- 21), which allows to quantify levels of stress, depression and anxiety among the target population (Rojas-Flores et al., 2017). Zeman et al. (2016) report that children of incarcerated parents are negatively impacted by imprisonment and can develop symptoms of anxiety and depression. Application of the DAS â€Å" 21 questionnaire has demonstrated that the girl scored normal on depression scale (2), however experienced mild anxiety (4), and felt extremely stressed (17 out of 21). These results demonstrate that the client indeed experiences symptoms of stress and anxiety most likely caused by incarceration of her father. Engagement strategies During the first encounters with the client major issues were experienced. The girl was unwilling to talk about her father, or discuss any other matters. When asked about where her father is, she replied that he is at work. The social work intern has therefore decided to apply the game strategy to engage with the child. According to the client`s grandmother, the child enjoyed pottery class and therefore a session of games involving clay was chosen to establish the contact. Adopting such technique indeed helped to establish a connection with the client and initiate a dialogue. At the end of the session, the client indeed acknowledged that her father was in prison and that she felt bad about it. Factors promoting and inhibiting change According to Zeman et al. (2016) it is important to consider various factors that can inhibit or promote the desired change. In this case, the ultimate goal is to decrease symptoms of stress and anxiety within the client and help her develop bond with her father, despite him being incarcerated. One of the key challenges is that the client`s family possesses a vehicle, however the incarcerated father is the only one who drives. This makes it difficult for the child to regularly visit her father. Another problem is that the child`s mother is rarely at home as she is busy working. Detached parent can create a significant barrier when attempting to develop a strong bond and help a child (Bloom Phillips, 2018; Rojas-Flores et al., 2016). Therefore, it is important to ensure that other guardians of the child have sufficient knowledge and understanding concerning how they can help the child deal with the change associated with parental incarceration. One key positive aspect is an extended family (grandparents) who became aware of the problem and involved the agency to attempt to solve it. According to Rojas-Flores et al. (2017), help from the extended family can often create environment for child where they feel safe and do not feel isolated. Justification of the baseline measures The specific baseline measures are highly important within this intervention. Some of the key measures will be related to the child being able to reconnect and regularly communicate with her father. The reconnection is important for both of them, however more so for the girl, as it will help her cope with the increased stress and anxiety. Another important measure will concern the actual levels of the anxiety and stress which can be measured using the tool discussed before the Depression and Anxiety Scale- 21. Additional measures may be applied if needed depending on the obtained intermediate results of the assessment. Treatment goals The measures discussed above will be used to establish whether the actual goals of the interventions were achieved by the agency or not. The following goals have been developed to guide the planned intervention: (1) to ensure that the client regularly visits her father (at least once per week) during the course of the intervention; (2) to ensure that the client`s levels of anxiety and stress are reduced to the normal level by the end of the intervention. It is essential that the established goal meet the SMART criteria, and therefore it will be possible to evaluate the effectiveness of the planned intervention. Description of the interventions The analysis of scholarly evidence- based literature suggests that a number of interventions may be appropriate within this specific case. First of all, the first type of intervention should be focused on facilitation of family unit enhancement. This will allow to help the client deal with the increasing uncertainty related to the parent incarceration. The specific step will be to ensure weekly meeting sessions when the client can see her father and bond with him. Such element of bonding can help strengthen family relations and self- esteem of the child. In addition to that the bond can help promote ethical behaviors in a child. Ensuring regular visitations can help avoid incarcerated parents not participating in upbringing of their children. The latter has been documented as a common problem (Rojas-Flores et al., 2017). The intervention, however, has to be desired by both parties to make it effective and promote actual bonding. Another intervention will concerning having short counselling sessions with the client. Such sessions will help encourage the client focus on the positive sides of the situation (e.g., the fact that she can see her father), as well as address some issues/ concerns the child may find confusing or difficult to address without professional help (Bloom Phillips, 2018). Such focus on positive sides can help promote positive behavior and help the child succeed in school. Another important intervention should involve providing counseling services to the guardians of a child. The guardians may experience uncertainty and difficulties associated with their new role. The guardians may also require some training and help in helping the child stay focused on positivity. According to Rojas-Flores et al. (2017) in such dysfunctional families children often feel isolated, and therefore more likely to engage in dangerous or even self- harming behaviors. Counselling sessions, on the other hand, can help guardians gain skills and understanding necessary to guide children and create a positive environment, which is both inclusive and supportive. Intervention assessment In order to assess the effectiveness of the intervention, the child performance will be evaluated six months prior to the beginning and six months after. The questionnaire will be used to assess stress and anxiety measures as well as ensure consistency of the obtained information. The tests will be developed on the specific measures obtained and it will be ensured that they are not intrusive for the child and the family. Finally, the trend- based approach will be used as the researcher will attempt to analyze and identify any trends/ patters emerging from the data during the course of the intervention. Termination process The termination process will be a logic finalizing step within the context of the PRAISES model. First of all, it will be communicated to all of the stakeholders that the intervention will last a certain period (6 -7 months) and then will end with the final evaluation. It is important that such timeframe is communicated not only to the child, but also the incarcerated parent and the guardians of the child. In order to ensure sustainability of the intervention, more responsibility will be placed on the guardians during the course of the intervention. This will help ensure that the child can indeed continue implementing change once the intervention ends. References Bloom, B., Phillips, S. (2017). In whose best interest? Cubism Review Free Essays

Benjamin T. Shirrell Painting 1 April 2010 The most interesting statement I found in my exploration of Cubism was from historian John Golding: Cubism was perhaps the most important and certainly the most complete and radical artistic revolution since the Renaissance. New forms of society, changing patronage, varying geographic conditions, all these things have gone to produce over the past five hundred years a succession of different schools, different styles, different pictorial idioms. We will write a custom essay sample on Cubism Review or any similar topic only for you Order Now But none of these has so altered the principles, so shaken the foundations of Western painting, as did Cubism. _ This statement put emphasis on the Cubist period, a time, which was of vast importance and developing style. Seeing the works and taking the time to understand them are two contributors that make these artists more significant. Picasso created a work in 1907, known as one of the century’s most important Les Demoiselles d’Avignon. Important in the sense that it moved other influential artists, but also because of deeper meaning in style and message. Although Picasso didn’t create his fully developed Cubist paintings in 1907, his work of that year instigated the cubist revolution. A brand-new approach representing space and the construction of form that was later a defying Cubists’ most important qualities. An important concept I learned understanding cubism understood the difference in experimental artists and conceptual artists. Experimental artists develop their contributions gradually and have a maturing style while conceptual artists put a more random thought provoked effort. Picasso’s initial goal was to describe knowledge of objects rather than their appearance. Before Demoiselles d’ Avignon, came a number of preparatory sketches. I was able to find a gallery of some sketches online, the most fascinating in my opinion. I noticed sketches from hard lines up to incorporation of color and later incorporation of instruments. I was greatly influenced by these sketches in my most recent works. How to cite Cubism Review, Papers

Women and The Bible Essay Example For Students

Women and The Bible Essay Women and The BibleThe Bible and the church have been the greatest stumbling blocks in theway of womans emancipation. A famous 19th century feminist named Elizabeth Cady Stanton voiced thisabout her struggle for womens freedom. Women, considered a lower class than themen, wanted this subjugation changed. Part of the reason for the subjugation ofwomen is that the Bible could be interpreted in many different ways to suit theneeds of the interpreter. These interpretations of the Bible are in partresponsible for the belief that women are of a lower class than men. The reasonthis belief is present in our society is that approximately 85% of Americans areJudeo-Christian. We see examples of these beliefs when we look at the church, the daily lives of women, and the media. Looking at 1 Timothy 2:11-12, we seewhy our religious society could interpret the Bible this way:Let a woman learn in silence with all submission, and do not permit a woman toteach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence. We will write a custom essay on Women and The Bible specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now We must look at the historical context of the passage. Writtenapproximately 2000 years ago, many parts of the Bible seem outdated. The passageportrays a time when women were property and were trained to be weak andfragile. This stopped only about 30 years ago. Before this time, society taughtwomen from birth to be submissive to men. What does this mean to us today? Itmeans that although American Society is no longer training women to besubmissive, the problem is still present in our belief system. Many churches donot believe that women should be part of the clergy. This is because theyinterpret parts of the Bible, such as 1 Timothy 2:11-12, as saying that only menshould preach. In 1848, women made a retaliation to these sentiments. At theSeneca Falls convention, women (including Elizabeth Cady Stanton) signed aDeclaration of Sentiments. In the declaration it states:He allows her in church, as well as state, but a subordinate position, claiming apostolic authority for her exclusion fro m the ministry, and, with some exceptions, from any public participation in theaffairs of the church(Declaration 1)The people that these women fought against, including other women, believe that it is the duty of a woman to be quiet and submissive. I haveexperienced this anti-freedom dogma growing up in the Church of Christ community. I experience this dogma when I talk with my grandmother, a woman who lives bythe Word. My grandmother states that I should be a good girl and keep my mouthshut and clean. She says that if I am quiet and do not tell my opinions, peoplewill like me better that way. My grandmother tries to teach the same submissivequalities that were taught to her when she was young. We, as a society, also seethis in media. In the November 5, 1996 airing of the sitcom Cybil, the futurestepmother of Cybils daughter was giving advice to the daughter. The advice wasthat women should let men win arguments. Cybil, enraged, made told her daughterthat she did not have to submit. Along with the belief that women must be submissive and silent, there isalso the belief that women are the cause of mens downfall and therefore areevil. The last two verses we look at talk about the story of the fall of Adamand Eve. In the story of Adam and Eve, God tells Adam and Eve that there is onetree in the garden of which they must not eat. Deceived by the devil, Eve eatsfruit from the tree and then persuades Adam to eat it. This act historicallydisplays the deception of man by woman and has put women in a very bad light. ITimothy 2:13-14 states:For Adam was formed from Eve, and Adam was not deceived, but the womanbeing deceived, fell into transgression. .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 , .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .postImageUrl , .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 , .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:hover , .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:visited , .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:active { border:0!important; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:active , .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802 .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9324d1a13ce994e6eb507818a1f56802:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: There seem to be many problems within the American educational system today EssayMeant for a different time, the basic belief that women are the cause ofmens downfall is obsolete. Some people say that this belief is not present inour society. I have heard men say that the reason that they are in the messthey are in is because of womens folly. Many popular Hollywood movies todayreflect these misogynistic attitudes and use themes that portray women as eviland deceiving. In these films, women want nothing else but to destroy men andthe order of society. One popular movie called Eve of Destruction, portrays awoman named Eve as a mechanical tool of destruction that destroys any thing thatgets in her path. The name Eve in this film indicates a link to the Eve of theBible, connotating treachery and deception and seen as a bane to mans existence. Not all the Bible portrays women as submissive and evil. Many stillbelieve that women must obey their husbands and live a life of subservience. Ifpeople look to this interpretation of the Bible for guidance, women will remaintreated as inferior. I am not saying that we need to get rid of the Bible, I amsaying that we need to get rid of interpretations of the Bible that arederogatory towards women; like the belief that women are not equal. Walmart Diversity Essay Example

Walmart Diversity Essay Example Walmart Diversity Paper Walmart Diversity Paper | Wal-Mart’s Diversity| Course Research Paper| | Alicia B. Clennan| 647 Pilgrim Dr. San Antonio, [emailprotected] com210-912-4537GM 591: Leadership and Organizational BehaviorProfessor Marco  Faggione| 12/12/2010 | Wal-Mart’s Diversity Introduction The organizational that will be the topic of discussion in my final project paper is Wal-Mart Corporate. Wal-Mart was founded in 1962, with the opening of the first Wal-Mart discount store in Rogers, Ark. The company incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores, Inc on Oct 31, 1969. The company grew to 276 stores in all states by the end of the decade. In 1983, the company opened its first Sam’s Club membership warehouse and in 1988 opened the first supercenter. Wal-Mart became international company in 1991 when it opened its first Sam’s club. Wal-Mart serves customers and members more than 200 million times per week at more than 8,692 retail units under 55 different banners in 15 countries. With fiscal year 2010 sales of $ 405 billion, Wal-Mart employs 2. 1 million associates worldwide. I am a sales associate at Wal-Mart in the jewelry department. I was hired in June of 2010 and I was not familiar with the corporation yet. However, I recognize how well the organization performs. Wal-Mart believes that business wins, when everyone matters and the true strength of diversity is unleashed, when each associate is encouraged to reach their full potential. As for as with Wal-Mart’s Diversity, personally I am not so familiar and only experience in a not so much with their purpose due to being employed in a span of four months. Research shows other issues with Wal-Mart’s ethical diversity. Wal-Mart is always under the microscope when it comes to discrimination. Evidence shows that there are complaints about favoritism, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination. These unethical issues are a problem in today’s occupation society. Problem Statement Wal-Mart has been a target of criticism for its employment practices and its effect on the larger economy and community. There are several incidents mentioned on the web and in court cases. At my Wal-Mart, I have noticed favoritism. Favoritism between managers and employees is a big problem in Wal-Mart. One way of thinking of favoritism is getting called to do the more responsibility type of work. This is like trying to be friends with the boss to get higher in the employment ladder. The managers seemed to have certain picks between subordinates about who gets the special attention. Like I said, I have noticed this act at my Wal-Mart. Most of the night shift girls are friends with one of the night managers at my Wal-Mart. I noticed them going out of their way to please this supervisor. There is an organization called Wal-Mart Watch which began a nationwide public education campaign to challenge the world’s largest retailer, Wal-Mart, to become a better employer, neighbor, and corporate citizen. This organization lets employees (former and present) leave blogs on â€Å"Wal-Mart Speaks Out† discussing issues they see in their Wal-Mart. One individual with the initial RR wrote writes: I was passed over at least five times for promotions because the only people that were getting promotions were the drinking buddies of a manager. She has since been fired; I was a union steward for 20 years in California and have never seen such disregard for labor laws. In this town, in retail if you are injured at work you are fired; this doesn’t only happen at Wal-Mart in [Colorado], it happens at all the grocery stores. I am outraged that they aren’t being forced to treat their employee’s better. With this information, it is unaccepted in the workforce. This can be considered unprofessional relationship in the workforce. It is almost as serious as a manager or a supervisor is having an affair with one of their workers. Favoritism also leads to other problems. These other problems have been reported of happening. Sexual harassment and discrimination for males vs. females have been reported about Wal-Mart. Several cases have been seen through the court systems. One example that will be mentioned later on in the report is of a sexual harassment case that took place in Crosby, TX. Another example that I will mention about in the discrimination of female workers, is about a gender discrimination lawsuit that was the largest in U. S. history. It happened to be about women not getting promoted and pay equally to men. Sexual harassment in the workforce is unacceptable. Wal-Mart has its share of complaints. In Crosby, TX, a former Wal-Mart employee had sued Wal-Mart for sexual harassment from her supervisor. Theil (2008) reported that a former employee named Jenna Aryain of Wal-Mart was sexually harassed by her supervisor. The incident happened on February 25, 2005 as a cashier. Aryain said that for four months her supervisor, Darrel Hays allegedly subjected her to appalling remarks every day. Her supervisor committed her about her looks and made sexual advances to her. Ms. Aryain allegedly complained to another supervisor and no action was taken by Wal-Mart. On June, 20, 2005, her supervisor allegedly yelled at her during work. She left work early that day and told her parents what had happened. Her father called the store manager, Gwendolyn Furr and Chelly Whiddon, an assistant manager, to arrange a meeting to discuss what was going on. Supervisors are much as guilty as the employee. Most supervisors have favorite employees that they count on with certain tasks. When an energetic employee is in your organization, most supervisors call upon them to do the task because they know that it will get done. Your other employees may have the same qualities as the energetic person so they felt left out. (Bielous, 1997) Literature Review Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Manual for Managers and Supervisors by Gibson (1998) guides the upper management on the importance of a sexually harassed free work environment. It lets managers know that the best defense for the sexually harassment subject is an offensive approach. There are actions that companies must take in order to eliminate sexual harassment. By creating a zero tolerance policy against sexual harassment and other inappropriate conduct by company managers and supervisors. Why is it important that managers and supervisors learn this subject? There is an automatic liability on the company if a manager or a supervisor is accused of sexual harassment or doesn’t stop it from happening. There is a law that makes it clear that prevention and elimination of sexual harassment is a must in the workplace. Gibson (1998) also writes that if a victim started the conversation of sex talk that they can claim sexual harassment at any time. A hostile work environment can be considered abusive if the behavior becomes severe or pervasive. Flirting or vulgar language is merely annoying and may not be hostile enough to take legal action, but it usually considered prohibited by company policy. Also a romantic relationship between management and subordinates is not against the law. If one does exist it cannot get out of hand. Getting out of hand may be determined as favoritism in the workforce. The relationship must be consensual between both parties in order to prevent harassment. A hostile environment in the workplace can consist of sexual play while on the clock. In the handbook that Gibson (1998) wrote, he mentions steps a company can take in preventing sexual harassment. First off, a company needs to have a strict written policy prohibiting sexual harassment. The policy should also define, provide examples, outline a procedure for reporting with several avenues to bypass his or her supervisor, mention assurance that all cases will be taken seriously, guarantee all cases have adverse consequences like discharge to the harasser, and all supervisory personnel to immediately report and sexual harassment. Along with a written policy, the company must train each employee on sexual harassment to avoid any pitfalls. The company needs establish an effective procedure for handling sexual harassment complaints. One good idea mentioned is to designate two individuals, one male and one female, in handling the complaints. Some individual feel more comfortable talking to someone of the same sex. Monitoring your management staff for anti-harassment behavior is a good idea or even including EEO preventive practices in daily routines. The organization should quickly investigate all claims and observed conduct. Feel free to give the victim time off to gather their thoughts to prevent them from quitting or suing the company. Separating the victim from the harasser may sound like a good idea, but be careful in where you put the victim. If the victim doesn’t like the area because of disadvantages of moving, it could be considered retaliation. The organizations should take all complaints seriously, even though it did happen five years ago. The employee can’t sue because of the time length; still the organization can make sure that the incident still needs to be controlled. The organization needs to have all sexually harassment cases documented for legal reasons. Valid documents may consist of statement from witnesses, complainant, and the alleged harasser. Other documents may include what the employer did to resolve the conflict. The company should make sure all confidentiality be taken to prevent further liability. Upper management should make sure that no retaliation takes place. In chapter eight, Gibson (1998) mentions an effective way to handle the complaint of sexual harassment. The organization needs to take the complaint seriously. Don’t be judgmental about the case even if the complaint comes from a chronic complainer. The company can be liable on how they handle the sexual harassment complaint. Try to put the victim at ease and assure with confidentiality. Assure the victim that non-retaliation is intolerable and should be reported. Handle all cases with action even though the victim asks that no action should take place to the harasser. The company can still be held reliable. Conducting an in-depth sexual harassment investigation can be difficult Gibson (1998) mentions. An immediate investigation by a neutral person should be handled as quickly as possible. This person is usually a member of the HRO or EEO. Other managers or supervisors should know what is going on in case they are asked to assist. Keep an investigation under general guidelines such as treating all cases separate, keep them valid until proven frivolous, protect the victim from further harm, document complete and accurate, keep all fact a â€Å"need to know† basis, limit the number of people who have access to the information, tell all parties to keep the case confidential, and never broadcast the facts as a training tool. If the case of the harassment to be found true, take prompt corrective action. Consider case by case on the severity of punishment to the harasser. If the victim doesn’t get discharge, warn them that next time a discharge will occur. Inform all results to effective parties in order to protect privacy. Make sure you follow up on all cases to make sure no one has been retaliated. Sometimes the investigator may come to some special circumstance when trying to resolve situations. If the accused wants a lawyer, assure them that there is no need for one and they are not required to have one. Also if there was no witness to the alleged claim, the investigator must take the credibility of the parties when determining the outcome. If the claim can’t be determined if it happened or not, then education to both parties must take place about sexual harassment. Further assure the victim that his or her employment conditions won’t be retaliated. Make sure the complaint is filed for legal reasons. If the claim turns out to be false, determine if the person deliberately lied or simply misread the conduct. Disciplining someone who misinterpreted the action may think they were retaliated, and the company could be held responsible. The law for gender discrimination makes it clear on what is expected in the workforce. Corporations are abided to follow laws and regulations in the United States. US Code Section 2000E-2: Unlawful employment practices (a) Employer practices It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer (1) to fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual, or otherwise to discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment, because of such individuals race, color, religion, sex, or national origin; or (2) to limit, segregate, or classify his employees or applicants for employment in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual of employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individuals race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. Analysis Ethical concept in the workforce keeps the organization is regarded as good character and conduct. We need to make ethical decisions based on focuses of moral dilemmas. Moral problems is that of an ethical consequences of a decision that was made. Ethical leadership is a responsibility that managers and supervisors must abide by. These responsibilities may include caring, honesty, principled, fairness, and balanced choices. Favoritism, does not match under those qualities. Favoritism is the soul issue that Wal-Mart faces today. I have seen favoritism in my workplace. Also favoritism is being viewed at all Wal-Marts around the world. With the other issues that Wal-Mart faces, sexual harassment and gender discrimination, favoritism is usually the root of the problems. Favoritism is more likely to be inevitable in any organization. Organizations should try to reduce them as much as possible. Emotional conflict is difficulties within oneself that arises because of anger, mistrust, dislike, fear, and resentment. Emotional conflict can the energy out of a person and can be distracting. You may see this emotional distress in teams, among co-workers, and in superior-subordinate relationship. There are certain levels of the conflict. One level of conflict you may have is interpersonal conflict. This is a conflict between two or more people. Sexual harassment may become an interpersonal conflict. When your supervisor makes sexual remarks or advances to an employee, conflict arises. When sexual harassment occurs it puts emotional stress on the victim. The victim feels anger toward the incident. Sexual harassment is intimidation, bullying or coercion of a sexual nature, or the unwelcome or inappropriate promise of rewards in exchange for sexual favors. That person will start feeling resentment in that did she do something wrong to cause the harassment. Effects of sexual harassment can vary depending on the individual, and the severity and duration of the harassment. Often, sexual harassment incidents fall into the category of the merely annoying. However, many situations can, and do, have life-altering effects particularly when they involve severe/chronic abuses, and/or retaliation against a victim who does not submit to the harassment, or who complains about it openly. Indeed, psychologists and social workers report that severe/chronic sexual harassment can have the same psychological effects as rape or sexual assault. Stereotyping is a commonly held popular belief about specific social groups or types of individuals. The concepts of stereotype and prejudice are often confused with many other different meanings. Stereotypes are standardized and simplified conceptions of groups based on some prior assumptions. Gender diversity is the proportion of males to females in the workplace. Corporations may have more of an even distribution or the employee pool is composed of mostly males or mostly females. This can have an effect on how people interact and behave with one another in the workplace and would impact culture and social environment. Similarly other demographics such as population, racial characteristics and such all contribute to the work environment. Though gender discrimination and sexism refers to beliefs and attitudes in relation to the gender of a person, such beliefs and attitudes are of a social nature and do not, normally, carry any legal consequences. Sex discrimination, on the other hand, may have legal consequences. Though what constitutes sex discrimination varies between countries, the essence is that it is an adverse action taken by one person against another person that would not have occurred had the person been of another sex. Discrimination of that nature in certain enumerated circumstances is illegal in many countries. Currently, discrimination based on sex is defined as adverse action against another person that would not have occurred had the person been of another sex. This is considered a form of prejudice and is illegal in the United States. Wal-Mart’s reports on gender discrimination of women in their corporation are illegal and should be taken care of. Like every class-action ruling, the certification should not be construed in any manner as a ruling on the merits or the probable outcome of these cases. When these cases arose back in 2001, women were getting 79 cents to every dollar a man made. (Friedman, 2010) Solutions There are solutions that could be used in order to correct the problem Wal-Mart faces. Training, discipline, and monitoring of all employees of Wal-Mart are the best steps in the right direction. If done right, Wal-Mart can start becoming a more successful corporation that others can follow. The corporation needs to take steps in training everyone in the organization on the right and wrong things to do when it comes to diversity. Having quarterly training will give each employee an implant of the things that are wrong. Being an ethical corporation involves everyone. First, start with training your supervisors about the right and wrongfulness of favoritism in the workforce. Tell them that even the little things may be perceived as playing favoritism. Cautioned them about the negative reactions of an extra relationship between supervisor and a subordinate can lead in the wrong direction. Also keep reminding your employees the zero tolerance policy about sexual harassment. Assure people that there will be consequences if supervisors abuse their power. Wal-Mart needs to let their employees that there will be no retaliation if reports are being filed. Let your employees know that gender discrimination is all in the past. Your employees would like to know if they are being paid the same amount. Let you employees know what the pay scale is in your organization. Train your employees on the right and wrong of gender discrimination. Training has its pros and cons. The good thing about training the material is that it gets the information out there to the right people. A people need to here that there are rules and regulations that corporation has to abide by. The bad thing about training is that it can take up a lot of time while people are training. Discipline is another possible solution. Strict guidelines and closure of all cases will ensure everyone is treated equally. Make sure that if someone is sexually harassed that the supervisor or anyone in the organization will be punished. Make sure the punishment is fair and justified. Treat each case upon severity of the case. Like training, discipline also has its pros and cons. Discipline will let everyone in Wal-Mart know that the company is not playing around when it comes with sexual harassment. One thing bad about discipline is that one person may view the severity differently than another person in your organization. Then punishment may be differently and the victim may think that the harasser got off scot free. Frequent monitoring of all your employees is another way we can solve the problem at Wal-Mart. Managers should more frequently review those security cameras. Make rounds to your entire departments and ask questions about how everything is doing. Make sure you not just talk to the supervisors; also talk with all of your staff, even the janitor. The good thing about monitoring is that you can interact to your staff and it lets them know you care about them. Sam Walton would love this idea. The bad thing is that the manager will lose valuable time in his office handling paperwork. Reflection Viewing Wal-Mart after writing this report has a much more meaning to me when I go to work. I can start using my ideas to make a difference in the work place. I can spread my knowledge to my fellow workmates. I can let them know how important it is too seek help if there are any problems. Diceratops - Facts and Figures

Diceratops - Facts and Figures Name: Diceratops (Greek for two-horned face); pronounced die-SEH-rah-tops; also known as Nedoceratops Habitat: Woodlands of North America Historical Period: Late Cretaceous (70 million years ago) Size and Weight: About 15 feet long and 2-3 tons Diet: Plants Distinguishing Characteristics: Two horns; odd holes on sides of skull About Diceratops (Nedoceratops) You can learn a lot about Greek numbers by studying ceratopsian (horned face) dinosaurs and their distant and not-so-distant relatives. Theres no such animal (yet) as Monoceratops, but Diceratops, Triceratops, Tetraceratops and Pentaceratops make for a nice progression (alluding to two, three, four and five horns, as indicated by the Greek roots di, tri, tetra and penta). An important note, though: Tetraceratops wasnt a ceratopsian, or even a dinosaur, but a therapsid (mammal-like reptile) of the early Permian period. The dinosaur we call Diceratops also rests on shaky ground, but for another reason. This late Cretaceous ceratopsian was diagnosed at the turn of the 20th century by the famous paleontologist Othniel C. Marsh, on the basis on a single, two-horned skull lacking the characteristic nasal horn of Triceratopsand given the name Diceratops, by another scientist, a few years after Marshs death. Some paleontologists believe this skull actually belonged to a deformed Triceratops, and others say Diceratops should properly be assigned to the synonymous genus Nedoceratops (insufficient horned face.) If, in fact, Diceratops winds up reverting to Nedoceratops, then the possibility exists that Nedoceratops was directly ancestral to Triceratops (this last, most famous ceratopsian only awaiting the evolutionary development of a third prominent horn, which should only have taken a few million years). If thats not confusing enough, another option has been touted by the famously iconoclastic paleontologist Jack Horner: perhaps Diceratops, aka Nedoceratops, was actually a juvenile Triceratops, in the same way Torosaurus may have been an unusually elderly Triceratops with a grotesquely overwrought skull. The truth, as always, awaits further fossil discoveries.

The Membership of the European Union and Employment in the UK Essay

The Membership of the European Union and Employment in the UK - Essay Example However in late Britain tends to understand and respect its long-standing membership with such a potential body like the European Union (Euromove, 2011). In the current era, United Kingdom is thus making every endeavor to help resolve conflicts pertaining to ideologies through holding open discussion forums with the members of the European Union (Perth and Hope, 2011). The employment relation policies followed in the European Union can be understood as follows. Firstly the European Union requires the employer bodies in the different member states to encourage its members to actively participate in the formation of trade unions. In that, the employees are rendered the right to collectively bargain for their right in cases where they are deprived of such and also can hold strikes as a sign to protest against the decisions of the employer body. Secondly, the employment relation policies followed by the European Union also require the employers to form collective agreements with the employees or representative bodies of the employees in regards to issues on compensation systems, leave policies and working hours and conditions in the concern. These policies of the European Union are found to be active whether in regards to a single employer or a group of employers in regards to a specific business or diversified business categories (Business Link, n.d.) . In the third case, the European Union body also requires the different employers belonging to the companies in the member nations to openly consult and share potential information with the different employees or employee groups. This policy tends to enhance the level of transparency in regards to the employer-employee relationships in the member countries. Fourthly the employer bodies pertaining to the member nations are strictly required to have a word with the representative bodies of the employees in the light of working out a redundancy plan. Herein, the employer bodies are required to effectively state as to how many numbers of people they require to be made redundant with also stating the need for planning of such action. Further, the employer bodies are also required to state plans through which the company would tend to reemploy the redundant employees or help them gain a suitable position in the future.   The employers are also required to state in what manner they have calculated and arrived at the number of employees they require to be turned off and therein must also reflect on the pattern taken to effectively compensate such people. Similarly, in the fifth case, the European Union body also requires the employer bodies pertaining to the companies operating in the member countries to rightly inform the staff in cases of any change or transfer of ownership into new hands. Sixthly the European Union also requires the employer or the management team of the companies operating inside its member countries and possessing an employee base of around 20 to continually inform them about the economic and employment status of the concern. In that, the employers are also required to inform the internal people about any substantial changes that the employers consider to bring about in the near future.   However, the general legislation brought about by the European Union in regards to employment relations must also be effectively dealt with country or regi on-specific circumstances to help enhance its due efficacy.

Hyperinflation in Zimbabwe Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Hyperinflation in Zimbabwe - Essay Example Two major events precipitated inflation in Zimbabwe and that is, involvement in Congo civil war in 1998 and the land expropriation of 2000. The Zimbabwe government entered into war on the side of Zaire’s dictator Laurent Kabila without having budgeted for the war, without any reserves for the war or any arrangements to raise the funds. The land expropriation program of 2000 saw the government forceful take 4,500 farms from white settlers and give it to war veterans and politicians (Coomer and Gstraunthaler 312). This led to reduction in foreign investment from 400 million US dollars in 1998 to a mere 30 million in 2007. The productivity of the land was also reduced by half between 2000 and 2007. This government policies also led to imposition of sanctions by the IMF, US, UK and EU. The government in order to win public confidence provided initiatives such as purchase of farm inputs for the farmers who had been given land. The farmers also used the land as securities for securing loans. This unforeseen expenditure compounded with the four year expenditure in Congo war led the Reserve bank of Zimbabwe to adopt inflationary policies such as printing more money and employing more staff. This led to devaluation of the Zimbabwean dollar and the central bank responded by printing more money and even increasing the face value. This is the origin of hyperinflation in Zimbabwe. By March 2007 the inflation rate in Zimbabwe was 2,200% while by October 2008 it rose to 3,840,000,000,000,000,000%! (Noko 347). Hyperinflation led to lose of value of the Zimbabwe dollar. Wealth was lost within months as millionaires were no longer wealthy. The prices of commodities went up leading the government to regulate the same. (Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas 11). This led producers to opt for other markets which led to an acute shortage of various products. The industries were dissolved, unemployment was at the highest level, poverty escalated and some citizens fled to other countries. The next section gives methods through which this hyperinflation could be solved. Solutions to Zimbabwe’s Hyperinflation Hyperinflation was brought about by the practices of Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. Replacing the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is a sure way of ending hyperinflation (Hanke1 23). Some countries such as Angola have contained their high inflation rates without replacing their central bank through change of policy. The question is why could this be implemented in Zimbabwe? This could not be adopted in Zimbabwe because from historical perspective policy change has never checked inflation in Zimbabwe. Moreover, all over the world hyperinflation has been linked to the issue of currency by the central bank or the concerned country’s treasury. Central banks can easily end inflation as they fuel them. One of the sure ways is to stop the printing of currency. This solution reduces money in circulation and contains hyperinflation, but it is a long process because it takes time for the central bank to regain its lost credibility. During this time interest rates on loans normally escalate and it is very difficult to get a long term loan because there is less money in circula

Effect of Battery Voltage on Output

Effect of Battery Voltage on Output Andy Nguyen Table of Contents 1.0 Introduction 1.1 Theory Review 1.2 Hypothesis 1.3 Materials Risk Assessment 3.0 Results and Analysis 4.0 Discussion 5.0 Conclusion 6.0 Appendix 1.0 Introduction The homopolar motor device or also known as unipolar motors are commonly used in everyday society. For example, it can be related to an electric circuit in cars or in high torque wind turbines. But in this case, the homopolar motor consists of an AA battery, copper wire and a neodymium magnet. The aim of this experiment only using this setup is to see how the voltage of the battery affects the number of times the wire revolves around the battery and magnet. It was hypothesised that the larger the voltage or battery, the longer it took to revolve around the battery as size is determining the current output. 1.1 Theory Review The magnet used in this experiment is called a Neodymium also known as Neodymium-iron-boron. This is a rare earth magnet and is stronger than the average magnet. It has a high resistance to demagnetization and its energy content level is high. If these magnets are not carefully stored or used properly, it can have major effects on the magnet such as corroding or caught on fire if used in high temperatures. Like any other magnet, the Neodymium magnet has a North and South Pole and depending on which side it’s used, it affects the direction in which the wire is rotating. Alkaline batteries are commonly used to make an electric device work. It contains chemical energy which then converts to electrical energy when placed in a device such as remotes and toys. An alkaline battery contains to electrodes, anode and cathode. Anode is an electrode through which electric current flows into a negatively polarized electrical device. A cathode is when the electrode flows out of the positively polarized electrical device. When electricity is run through a loop or coil of wire, the electricity has passed through a magnetic field, refer to appendix 3. The Neodymium magnet has both North and South Pole which attracts and repels the current flowing through the rotor thus creating a constant torque which leads to the loop of wire spinning. This repetitive attracting and repelling can go on continuously as long as a stable current goes through it. To find out how the radius of the wire affects the speed of the revolutions, angular velocity must be found. Angular velocity can be considered as a vector quantity thus this unit is measured in radians per second. The formula for angular speed is: Where is the revolutions per minute and is the time taken in seconds. The formula is then multiplied by for the full circular motion unit for a circle is measured in radians. Polarisation is when the charges inside a particular object is split and separated into each ends away from their distinctive other. A magnet for example, when polarised has two poles, where one end of the pole consists of positive charges whilst the other end will consist of negative charges. This concept determines the direction at which objects rotate. 1.2 Hypothesis It was hypothesised that the bigger the radius of the wire, the slower the angular speed will be. But as the voltage is increased using the same radius, the angular velocity of the copper wire will increase. Increasing the copper wire to a bigger radius and changing the voltage of the battery would have an effect on the speed of the revolutions. This should be due to the copper wire having to travel around a larger battery which means more time for the wire to revolve. 1.3 Materials 1.5 Volt Alkaline battery Neodymium magnet Copper wire Pliers Smart phone 1.4 Safety Risk Assessment The only hazard from this experiment is the possibility of being poked by the wire, having a slight burn on your fingers from the heated wires or to jam your fingers in between magnets. To prevent this from happening, there must be a lot of caution when handling the experiment, such as being alert where the wires are and not holding on to the wire for too long, as it may cause burn and also to keep all magnetic objects away from the neodymium magnet, as it is a very strong magnet and can jam your finger between objects or a sharp object. 2.0 Method Experiment measuring how radius (r) and voltage (v) affects angular speed Place the neodymium magnet on a flat surface Place the negative (flat end) of the AAA battery onto the neodymium magnet. Use pliers to cut the wire to appropriate length. Mould and bend copper wire so that wire has a radius of 2cm from centre and make the two ends of the wire spiral down the battery and touch the magnet. The copper wire will move in a circular motion when the ends of the wire touch the magnet, record with smart phone. Review recording in slow motion and measure revolutions/minute. Repeat steps 2-6 for radii 3cm and 4cm. Repeat steps 2-7 for AA and D batteries. Refer to Appendix 2 for picture of experiment. 3.0 Results and Analysis Figure 1 Figure 2 In figure 1, it shows that 1V (blue) and 1.5v (red) has a correlation with one another as a result of their respected lines almost being parallel. This is due to the two wires having almost the same voltage from the battery which would mean that the rpm would almost be the same. 3.1 Error Analysis Table one show the result of the three different sized radii’s that was moulded to find the angular speed. A number of three trials were conducted to ensure that the results that were given were not abnormal and were accurate. Each trial went for 60 seconds each and the averages of the speed were calculated. In each trial, a margin of  ±1 was used since the copper wire stopped halfway or not completing the rotation. As shown in table 1, it is clear that the bigger the radius of the wire, the slower the angular velocity. The difference is only slight because of the small difference in the radius of the wire. 4.0 Discussion The results of the experiment support the hypothesis that, when the radius of wire was widened, the slower the revolutions per minute. But when it came to increasing the voltage of the battery, there was an increase in revolutions per minute. By using the same radii that were used in the previous experiment for the AAA battery, the speed is increased when the AA battery was used. Then the revolutions per minute were significantly increased when using the D battery due to the amount of voltage in the D battery. From the data collected in table, angular velocity was able to be found using calculations shown in appendix 1. When the three batteries are compared, it is clear that as the battery voltage is increased, the faster the angular velocity. Even though increasing the radius of the wire affects the speed, it still supports the hypothesis that as the voltage is increased, the faster the angular velocity will be. As expected, the larger the amount of volts the battery discharges, the more current flows through the copper wire, causing it to have a higher revolution per minute rate. The greater the current flow the larger the magnetic field that is produced around the wire, and more force is produced to act upon making the wire spin. The copper wire that was used was incredibly thin so there was not a lot of contact with the battery or the magnet. Since the wire is thin, there is a small path in which the current flows in which only give the electrons to flow in a straight line. If the wire was thicker and bigger in diameter, then there would be less resistance since the electrons would be able to flow freely. Since the batteries have a significantly low resistance, the electrons are free to flow easily through the thin copper wire. Therefore the factor of the resistance can be excluded when measuring the angular speed. With the data collected, it was used to make a graph which showed the relationship between the volts of the battery and the angular speed. The vertical lines on the graph represent the margin error of  ±1 since the wire did not complete the full revolution. Other possible errors that could have occurred while gathering this data was the rounding error, to minimize large numbers, two significant figures were used. Copper wire loses conductivity after each consecutive trial without cutting the ends off. With the discovery of this possible error, cut the end bit of copper wire so that the conductivity would be the same each time which would make the results as accurate and precise as possible. Another possible source or error for this experiment is if the wire fell off the battery halfway through its rotations and/or if the ends of the copper wire lost direct contact to the magnet and slowed down during its rotations. These possible sources of error could be prevented by creating a slight dent on the battery to create a little hole for the wire to sit comfortably on and to create a solid spiral down the battery so that the ends don’t become loose and lose contact with the magnet. So that the results could be as precise as possible, because if the ends of the copper wire lose contact with the magnet, it loses the velocity and momentum and would slow down, and thus affects the rpm. Another possible source of error is drainage of the battery after consecutive trials causing less voltage to flow into the wire thus affecting its angular velocity, this could be prevented by using a power pack instead of battery. 5.0 Conclusion In conclusion, the results that were gathered supported the hypothesis that even with a larger radius, when increasing the voltage of the battery, the angular speed is increased. As the results show that the D battery, although larger radius than the AA battery, still had twice the amount of revolutions per minute because it had twice the amount of voltage. 6.0 Appendix Appendix 1 Using the formula for angular speed: Appendix 2 Appendix 3 Appendix 4

Their ideas such as division of labor and comparative advantages are still discusses and implied in today's world. The work of this paper is to examine the main thoughts of five leading economists of classical period, namely Adam Smith, Thomas Malthusian, David Richard, Jeremy Beneath and John Mill and to compare their thoughts and concepts. Also, the relevance of contributions of their ideas in today's context will be discussed. Background Before classical period there was mercantilism period (1500 – 1776). During that time, manipulations and government intervention in the market is being practiced. Wealth of a nation is weighed in terms of gold and silver that a country possessed. Therefore international trade is discouraged by th e implementation of tariff, in order to prevent wealth flowing to other countries. However, as scientific revolution and industrial revolution take place, it helps to nurture the ideas of classicists. (Refer appendix 1 for influence of scientific revolution) There are a few main features in classical economics thoughts. Firstly, classical economists advocate free trade in rake. Without government intervention, the economy could self-adjust to achieve full employment. Secondly, each party, I. E. He merchants, workers and consumers will each seek self-benefit as it is in the human nature. Hence, harmony of interests will be achieved when the pursuit of self-interest will eventually leads to the best interest of the society. Thirdly, classicists consider all economic resources such as land, labor, capital and entrepreneurship as the nation's wealth and lastly, the classicists made a remarkable contribution to economics by explaining economic horses explicitly. Adam Smith (1723 – 1790) is often regarded as the father of modern political economy. In his life he had written two books, The Theory of Moral Sentiments and An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. Moral Sentiments discussed the moral forces that restrain selfishness and bind people together in a workable society; Wealth of Nations assumed the existence of a Just society and showed how the individual is guided and limited by economic forces. (Bruce and Grant, 2007: p. 62) Adam Smith economic ideas are something of a novelty during his time. He introduced the idea of division of labor, which in today's word means specialization.By practicing division of labor, the productivity could be increased as (1) workers' skills are enhanced when they perform only one single task, (2) time for changing work task from one to another is saved, and (3) invention of machines could help increasing productivity once tasks have been simplified and made routine. (Bruce and Grant, 2007). Another i dea being pointed out by Smith is the harmony of interest. When all parties in a economy is seeking their self-interest, the natural order of the oral will eventually channel it to become social good. The key behind this complex mechanism is the concept of competition. Thus, Smith opposed government intervention in the market for the corruption and favoritism will leads to monopoly and competition will fail. This also implies in international trade. Smith thinks that have an advantage in and trades it with other countries. Although Smith is against government involvement in the economy, he did suggest a few roles that government could play in the economy. (Refer to appendix 2) When talk about value, Smith is of he opinion that measurement of value should be labor. The value of any commodity to a person, who possesses it, if he wishes to exchange it for other commodities, is equal to the quantity of labor which it enables him to purchase or command. Labor, therefore, is the real measur e of the exchangeable value of all commodities. (Bruce and Grant, 2007:p. 72) However, Smith did noticed that there are practical and theoretical difficulties in this theory. (Refer appendix 3 for further details) Thomas Malthusian (1766 – 1834) advanced the population theory in his publication An Essay on the Principle of Population. He states that population will increases at a geometric rate when unchecked while subsistence would only increases at best arithmetic rate. He suggested 2 types of checks, first is preventive checks which are those that reduce the birth rate and second, positive checks which are those that increase the death rate, to control population growth. Part of Malthusian ideas were adopted when the Poor Law Amendment of 1834 was passed. In his later work Principles of Political Economy, Malthusian came out with the theory of market gluts. He suggested that insufficient demand would occur due to inequality of distribution of income.Due to that, spending by landlords is important to prevent a glut of goods on the market which would turn into economic stagnation. (Bruce and Grant, 2007) David Richard (1772 – 1823) is a influential figure in the field of economics. He is hailed as the economists' economist for his extraordinary contributions in economics. The man who only had 14 years of formal education addressed economic matters academically. One of his main thoughts is the theory of free trade and from here derived the law of comparative costs, also known as law of comparative advantage. He explained that a person or country should produce goods which they can produce t a lower opportunity cost as compared to their competitors. In doing so, they would be more efficient and when traded with another country that practices the same theory, would achieve mutual benefit. Taking Turbot's concept of diminishing returns in agriculture, Richard used it to develop his theory of rent and introduced the law of diminishing returns. The law says that as the number of factor of production I. E. Labor increases, assuming sisters Paramus, the marginal product will at some point diminish. In the discussion of value, Richard said that a commodity must have use alee if it is to have exchange value. The use value of a commodity is derived from their scarcity and also the quantity of labor requires in obtaining it. Although utility is vital, it is not a measurement of exchange value. Time needed for producing the good and obtaining the raw material to produce the good is the exchange value for a commodity, according to Richard. The minimization of a person's pleasure, advanced the principle of utility. This notion is that people pursue things that provide pleasure and avoid things that produce pain; all individuals seek to maximize their total pleasure. Bruce and Grant, 2007:p. 122) Unlike hedonism, Beneath added the ethical doctrine into utilitarianism that human action should direct to the greatest happiness of the greatest nu mber of people. For that reason, Beneath was very active in social reforms. He supported free education for all, right for women, abolition of slavery and death penalty and many more. The major problem with Bantam's utility theory was that pleasure, a kind of emotion could not be quantify or measure. He tried to measure it using the Felicia Calculus, but he himself acknowledged the flaws in his calculation. John Stuart Mill who attended home schooling had his father, James Mill as his teacher. As a result, he got influenced by Bantam's thoughts of utilitarianism, as his father is a close friend to Jeremy Beneath. He further enhanced the utilitarianism concept, stating that enjoyment ought to be viewed in terms of not only quantity but also quality. (Anagram, 2012) His publication, Principles of Political Economy summarizes and fused all the economic knowledge up to his day.His discussed various issues from production to international trade. His most important and original contributio n is the law of international values. He implied the elasticity of demand for goods in his theory and successfully showed that the real exchange price takes into account not only the domestic costs, but also the elasticity of demand for each product abroad. Comparisons of Ideas between the Five Economists After reading the main thoughts of the five economists, we can see the evolution of economic thoughts in the timeline. The masters each have their own explanation on various topics, sometimes agreeing with each other and other times which they argued. From a bigger picture, we can depict that the ideas during the early period of lassie period varies from ideas of those in the end of classical period. For example, Adam Smith proposed laissez-fairer with minimal government involvement as the invisible hand in the market would eventually move the market to its equilibrium stage. However, Jeremy Beneath, who holds the idea of the greatest happiness for the largest number of people, thin ks that government should overlook the economy and social policy. In international trade issue, Adam Smith explained that export could remove surpluses in market but it could be done only when a country has absolute advantage in producing the particular goods. It was Richard then who argued that country could still benefit from trade even without absolute advantage. He introduced the theory of comparative costs, which is a situation when a country could produce certain goods with relative lower opportunity cost than the other country, and trades between them would still benefit each other.Mill supported Orchard's view of international trade, and further elaborated it by the law of international values. Mill said that the international price of trade is determined by the elasticity of demand of the product. Mill's theory is important as it overcome the economy. On the topic of value, Adam Smith placed his concern in value of exchange. He explained that the measurement of value should be labor and in exchanging commodities, both commodities should have equal quantity of labor to obtain it. As for Richard, he defined exchange value must have use value. The use value of a good is derived from its scarcity and also numbers of labor needed to obtain it. Richard then argued that exchange value of a good rely not only on the time used by labor to produce it, but also the time taken to obtain raw materials and capital goods which s used in the production process. In examining Thomas Malthusian ideas, the work of a very controversial man during his time, we could see that his works are favored by the wealthy landlords and on the other hand, pushed the lower classes – the poor people – into a deeper pit.In his population theory, he states that â€Å"population when unchecked increases geometrically, while subsistence increases at best arithmetically'. Therefore, to control the population growth there is preventive checks and positive checks. Richard, who is a close friend to Malthusian, argued that the theory s untrue and as a matter of fact, as years go by, the increment of food production is higher than increment of population growth. Contributions of the Classical School in Contemporary It is undeniable that the ideas of classical economists are a breakthrough in the mercantilism period and set forth the foundation of modern economic studies.Their works, being influenced by the scientific revolution, seeks experimental evidence to support and verify their ideas thus increase the credibility of their works. Below are three economists that made lasting contributions to the economic until today: 1 . Credited with the title father of modern political economy, Adam Smith indeed had made a huge impact in transformation of economy from mercantilism to free market. The most valuable idea that he leave for us would be the harmony of interest. The key behind the mechanism that brought all self-interest seeking behavior to become a social good, commonly also known as the invisible hand, is the concept of competition. It is because of competition that producers are restrained from making extra profit and hence drives down the price of goods. This theory is still recognized n today's economy. 2. David Richard Richard made a significant contribution with his theory of comparative advantage that served as a cornerstone in today's international trading policies.Although it was later refined by John Mill, nevertheless credits should still be given to this man. 3. Thomas Malthusian Despite being a controversial figure and his theories favor the upper class of the society, Thomas Malthusian still made some contributions to the contemporary economy. It was through his notions that the population growth issue is being concerned and later developed to be a formal study. It was his work regarding market gluts that later catches Keynes attention and expanded it. The classical school of thoughts indeed is an essential period in the his tory of the economical behavior of the society.

In 2003, 7.1% of Americans aged 12 or older were classified as current substance abusers. Statistically significant increases in the use of heroin, marijuana, cocaine, and pain relievers were reported from 2000 to 2001 (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration [SAMHSA], 2002).
